Cancer has become one of the deadliest diseases in the world that many people avoid. Did you know that the food we eat every day can be one of the causes of cancer. Popcorn, fries, snacks, red meat, soda, and alcohol are some foods that can increase cancer risk. These foods are not only a cause of cancer because of the substances in them, but also because of their processing.
Cancer can happen to everyone, and many people today are experiencing it. Therefore many people try to prevent cancer by starting a healthy lifestyle and avoiding foods that can cause cancer. Healthy lifestyles can be done such as not smoking, avoiding stress, regular exercise, having enough sleep, and routine check-up with a doctor.
In addition to a healthy lifestyle, here are foods that you need to avoid, and limit them to avoid cancer.
1. Red meat and processed meat
Red meat such as beef, and goats, and processed meat can cause cancer according to several studies. Japan Public Health Center research that consuming large amounts of red meat can increase the development of colorectal cancer. Whereas according to Cancer Research UK, meat can also cause breast cancer because of consuming it in large quantities, and related to how to cook it.
Besides breast cancer, and colorectal cancer, red meat can also cause colon cancer. Consuming white meat like chicken, fish will be safer and not cause cancer. If you like red meat, eat in sufficient quantities.
Red meat has better nutrition than poultry such as protein, carbohydrates, iron, zinc, vitamin B12, and zinc. The consumption of red meat that is allowed is 70 grams per day, or replace it with poultry and fish.
Processing red meat is also a cause of cancer, baking red meat until cooked can change the chemical and molecular structure of meat. Roasting meat can cause it to be carcinogenic or cause cancer. Therefore it is recommended to steam it and boil it.
Besides red meat, processed meats such as sausages, ham, turkey, and bacon can also cause cancer. Processed meat contains chemical preservatives which are usually sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate to make it look fresh. Both preservatives cause colon cancer and other cancers.
Alcohol is often associated with cancer causes after tobacco. Besides being able to cause heart disease and stroke, alcohol can also cause cancers of the mouth, esophagus, liver, intestines, colon, rectum, and breasts. Research in America revealed that consuming 1 cup of alcohol per day can increase the risk of breast cancer by 30%.
The research conducted by Cancer Research UK published in the journal Nature explains how alcohol can cause cancer. This study was conducted in mice to find out how alcohol can cause permanent genetic damage. This genetic damage is seen by analyzing chromosomes and sequencing DNA by acetaldehyde after giving dilute alcohol or ethanol to mice. Acetaldehyde is a chemical that the body will produce when processing alcohol and has dangerous properties.
The results showed that acetaldehyde can damage and break down DNA in blood stem cells resulting in chromosome rearrangements. This chromosome rearrangement can permanently change the DNA sequence in cells. Damage to blood stem cells can cause cancer, therefore alcohol is also associated with cancer risk. Some experts also mention that cancer cells can develop if there is damage to the stem cell DNA. This research also revealed how the body can protect itself from damage caused by alcohol by producing aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDH) enzymes which function to break down harmful acetaldehyde into acetate which is used for the body’s cell energy.
3. Soda and carbonated drinks
Soft drinks have no nutrients and contain high calories, sugar, and artificial additives. Soft drinks are very damaging to health and can cause cancer if consumed in excess. The content of substances in soda will help acidify the body and cause cancer cell growth.
Diet soda contains aspartame, is a cause of cancer and birth defects. Besides aspartame, the content of sucralose, saccharin, and other types of artificial sweeteners has been shown to increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
Consuming excessive butter can cause cancer. Butter has high fat levels which can trigger cancer. Butter actually has fatty acids that are good for health if consumed in moderation. This is consistent with studies that reveal high-fat milk such as butter can reduce colorectal cancer.
5. High calcium milk
Drinking 2 cups of milk a day does not cause cancer. Some studies that reveal drinking milk can cause cancer are when drinking milk excessively. Other studies have revealed a link between high calcium intake and prostate cancer. High calcium milk can reduce calcitriol which is known to actively protect men from prostate cancer.
Excessive consumption of eggs can increase cholesterol in the body that correlates with the risk of cancer. But this research still cannot prove clearly how cholesterol in eggs can cause cancer. We better not eat eggs naturally is not excessive, high cholesterol can increase the risk of heart disease.
In several studies, high amounts of soy isoflavone intake reduced the risk of breast cancer in Asian women pre and post menopause. Soybean is associated with cancer because isoflavones in soybeans act like estrogen in the body. Whereas breast cancer requires estrogen to grow, so soybeans make sense if it is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer, but this has not been proven in most studies.
8. Sweet foods and drinks
Consuming excessive amounts of sweet foods and drinks can cause diabetes, obesity and cancer. Blood sugar levels are a food for cancer cells to grow. Therefore, the risk of cancer will be higher in people who often consume sweet foods and drinks in excessive amounts.
Most sweet foods and drinks contain artificial sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are additives commonly used in various food and beverage products that taste sweet. Artificial sweeteners or processed sugars can quickly increase insulin levels and increase cancer cell growth. Foods that contain processed sugar and have sweet taste, such as cakes, cakes, pies, and sauces should be avoided.
Artificial sweeteners which are usually found in foods and beverages such as aspartame and saccharin. Aspartame can make you addicted to certain foods and drinks. Aspartame is a chemical in sweeteners that can cause cancer, defects in babies, and heart problems.
9. Bread with potassium bromate
Bread contains various nutrients such as minerals, iron, calcium, folate, and carbohydrates. Bread containing potassium bromate can cause cancer because it is considered a carcinogen, a substance that has the potential to cause cancer in humans.
10. Microwave food
All microwave-heated foods have the potential to cause cancer. Chemicals in the microwave are useful for keeping food fresh when eaten. Some studies reveal that these ingredients can cause cancer and infertility. In addition, if you use a plastic container it will release a lot of chemical poisons when heated in the microwave.
When you heat popcorn with the packaging in the microwave, popcorn becomes one of the foods that can cause cancer. This is because popcorn packaging when heated in a microwave, PFC will break down to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). When you eat the popcorn, this PFOA chemical will enter the body. When PFOA passes through the bloodstream, cancer cells can grow.
11. Snack packaging
Packaged snacks such as snacks can cause cancer because they contain preservatives and artificial flavorings. Preservatives such as sodium benzoate are found in processed products and beverages. Sodium benzoate in soft drink products can be benzene when combined with vitamin C, this ingredient can cause cancer. Packaging of vinyl chloride for wrapping snacks is also a carcinogenic ingredient or cancer trigger.
12. Foods cooked in high temperatures
Some foods such as potato chips and French fries are processed at high temperatures, and repeatedly using oil can cause cancer. Both of these foods contain acrylamide, a carcinogenic substance that forms in food at high temperatures when fried or baked. Acrylamide is formed when foods that are rich in carbohydrates, break down when fried and then react with amino acids. Some studies show that this substance can cause cancer in humans.
13. Salmon from the farm
Salmon from farms has high levels of PCBs, mercury, and doxin which can cause cancer. Salmon from farms also have lower omega-3 and vitamin D than wild salmon. Most of the cultivated salmon are given foods containing chemicals, antibiotics, peticides, and other carcinogens to control the outbreak of viruses, bacteria and parasites.
14. Canned tomatoes
Canned tomatoes and some canned vegetables generally have a problem with BPA (bisphenol A) which has an impact on the human body even at the lowest level. Canned tomatoes can cause cancer and other health problems such as metabolic disorders, heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Canned tomatoes have a higher risk because they have high acidity causing BPA to dissolve from the tin layer into the fruit.
Many studies have been carried out on the effect of BPA on animals which are feared to change the way sex hormones estrogen and testosterone work in the body that are directly related to the reproductive system and the brain. Other studies link BPA with high rates of breast cancer exposure and metabolic disorders. Choose tomatoes and mix fresh or frozen without additional ingredients that will be better for health.
15. Fruits containing pesticides
Fruits containing pesticides can cause cancer when consumed. Pesticides are the number one cause of cancer and fruits use pesticides most often. This is in accordance with research conducted by the Association for Cancer Research in Washington, DC. This study revealed that people exposed to pesticides were associated with a 71 percent increase in the risk of liver cancer.
Fruits such as apples, oranges, strawberries, and grapes use pesticides most often. We recommend that you choose organic fruit that is free of pesticides or wash the fruit first before consuming it even though this does not guarantee the pesticide is 100 percent lost.
16. Processed foods made with hydrogenated oil
Foods made with hydrogenated oil can cause cancer. Hydrogenated oil can change the structure and integrity of cell membranes in the body and cause cancer. Hydrogenated oil is a chemically extracted vegetable oil from its source, and more chemicals are added to change the smell and taste. This oil makes durable processed foods for sale in supermarkets.
17. White flour
White flour has a high glycemic index causing an increase in blood sugar levels. High carbohydrates in white flour will be converted into sugar by the body, simple sugars are a food source for cancer cells. In a journal shows that processed carbohydrates in white flour can increase the risk of breast cancer in women. Choose flour that has not gone through the bleaching process to avoid the risk of cancer.
18. Foods that are preserved using nitrates and genetically modified foods (GMO)
Marinated, smoked or pickled foods usually use preservatives containing nitrates that can cause cancer. Processed meats such as sausages, or canned meat can be proven to trigger colorectal cancer and stomach cancer. In the body nitrates turn into nitrosamines, which are chemicals that can cause cancer in the liver or digestive tract. Smoked meat and fish can produce Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (HPA), which are chemicals causing cancer. Stay alert if you consume processed meat, make sure there is no ingredient on the packaging label.
Genetically modified foods can cause cancer growth in the human body. Corn, soybeans, canola and other genetically modified foods will make it no longer organic. GMOs make these foods pass through chemical processes and many people do not know the long-term effects on health. Choose foods that are labeled GMO-free or organic, and avoid foods that are processed through biotechnology.
